in some of them. two states, he actually did worse. florida was the only state where there was a significant increase. just florida. a state the president didn't even have to win in order to win the election. so paul ryan's theory about how and why they lost, the surprise urban turnout might make him feel better about what happened, but it doesn't explain why. okay. now it's time for round two. things people are saying about the election but it makes them feel better to say it anyway. round two. mitt romney in 2012 versus john mccain in 2008. among liberals who are happy that mitt romney lost and among conservatives who are trying to say i told you so about the reasons mitt romney lost, there's been a fair amount of bipartisan anti-mitt romney glee over the idea that mr. romney received even fewer votes for president than john mccain did back in 2008. turns out that is not true. it may have looked like that on election night or on the day after the election. but millions of votes aren't counted right after the election. it takes days and even weeks after the election

but this campaign has been counting on, quite frankly, florida or virginia to be called and, of course, ohio and they can see all of our coverage and all of the net works talking a lot about ohio but this room, they're politically clued in and knows that this campaign needs ohio. i'm tethered to the broadcast location but i haven't seen any of the top key advisers. they're sort of hunkered down as are the romneys. mitt and ann in a hotel room with the five boys and the grandchildren and paul ryan also here in boston. he's not in the room with the romneys. he and his wife and his mother who has been on the trail with him, they're staying at another hotel here in boston, not far from here but they're watching the returns come in separately. i have reached out to a couple of sources on the campaign and can tell you the night is not over. these states are very close along the east coast, florida, virginia, as i mentioned earlier, they're not ready to certainly concede anything, but they're also not terribly upbeat about the way the night is unfolding. >> to sharyn alfonsi in wisconsin and she's

together and there is one outlier down there in the south the state of florida we have not been able to make a cbs news projection for the state of florida yet because the vote there is so close. it won't make a difference in this race. it was ohio that put president obama over the top tonight, even if mitt romney won florida tonight it would not be nearly enough to bring him up to parody with the president. but let's have a look at the vote count in florida. this is the tabulated vote. 97% of the vote is in. the president has a slender lead but look at that. out of 8 million votes cast, the president has roughly 70,000 more votes than mitt romney. out of eight million or so votes cats in florida. remarkable thing. let's have a look at the popular vote as well. this is the national popular vote. 54 million for the president, 53 million and change for mitt romney. the president has about a million more votes than mitt romney at this point. this is not of course the vote that matters, it is the electoral vote that matters but this is the way the popular vote is being counted at this mo
